Coastal BioTech Services, Inc. offers the medical,
dental, and commercial community a quality control program
for sterilizer systems. Coastal BioTech Services, Inc.
third party sterilizer monitoring assurance programs consist
of business reply envelopes containing chromatography paper
impregnated with bacterial spores and may be used to monitor
the efficacy of steam, chemical vapor, dry heat, and gas-EtO
sterilization processes. Our tests are dual purpose and can
be used to monitor any of the four types of sterilizers. Our
strip populations contain both Bacillus sterothermophilus
and Bacillus subtilis var Niger. A microbiological monitor
is the only effective way to ensure that sterilization has
been achieved. Although autoclave tape and bag markers indicate
exposure to sterilization and that the proper temperature
has been achieved, they do not verify that sterilization has
been successful. Studies of the adequacy of medical, dental
and commercial office sterilization have been variable, ranging
from four to ten percent failure in monitored sterilization
attempts. It has been our observation that a majority of sterilization
failures have been due to human error and not that of equipment
failure.
